AUSTRALIANS AT THE LMGI AWARDS

Nominations Revisited

Calling all Locations Department crew! It is time to submit your best work for the 13th Annual LMGI Awards, presented by Location Managers Guild International (LMGI). This awards ceremony provides an opportunity for Locations Department teams and screen commissions worldwide to take a moment to celebrate the unsung hero of filmmaking, the character on screen that never speaks – the film location.

Since its formation in 2003 as the Location Managers Guild of America, LMGI has gone from strength to strength, holding its inaugural awards celebration in March 2014, then rebranding to LMGI in 2016, to reflect the growing international presence of its membership. In 2024 two Australian productions were acknowledged for their work; Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga for the Outstanding Locations in a Period Feature Film, and The Fall Guy, for Outstanding Locations in a Contemporary Film. Additionally, Screen agency Screen NSW  and council City of Sydney  were also nominated for Outstanding Film Commission for their support and facilitation of The Fall Guy. In 2022 the first series of The Tourist was filmed in South Australia and was nominated for Outstanding Locations in a Television Serial Program, Anthology, or Limited Series.

THE TOURIST

The Tourist was a STAN original 6 x part series filmed in 2021 in South Australia, predominately in The Flinders Ranges and town of Orroroo, during the turbulent COVID pandemic.

It was created and produced by BAFTA®-nominated and Emmy®-winning UK screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams (Baptiste, The Missing, Liar,) and stars Jamie Dornan, as a mysterious character who wakes up in the Australian Outback with no recollection of who he is. The series also stars Danielle Macdonald, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Damon Herriman.

The production was nominated for several film craft awards including a BAFTA,  as well as nominations from the Royal Television Society UK, British Society of Cinematographers, several Australian Logie and ACCTA awards, (including the well-deserved win by production designer Scott Bird for ACCTA Best Production Design in Television.)

The South Australian Locations team was headed by supervisor Sarah Abbey and included Mark Evans (ALMG Vice President), Maria Humphreys & ALMG State Representative for South Australia, Scott McCarten.

WHY THE ANNUAL LMGI AWARDS MATTER

LMGI promotes awareness of the Location Department’s place in the entertainment industry as indispensable creative collaborators.  In March 2023 – journalist Lindsay Kusiak wrote an article in the Hollywood Reporter commenting on the 95th Academy Awards titled Why Location Scouts Deserve Academy Recognition. Kusiak had lamented “Directors, actors, production designers, editors, costume designers, writers, composers and more will be celebrated for their artistic vision, yet one of the greatest visionary roles in film — that of location scouts — will once again go unrecognized.” Fortunately, Location Managers Guild International has created an awards ceremony to fill this gap. While there are hopes from our department members across the globe to expand our inclusion in screen industry awards nights, this peer recognition by LMGI is extremely important, as colleagues working in the specialisation of Location Management truly understand the level of creativity and challenges involved with the job. The LMGI mixers and awards nights are a great way for our department to strengthen our screen community, recognise our achievements and raise the benchmarks for excellence in our field.
